Significant improvements have taken place in all aspects of dentistry during the past quarter century. Improved treatment techniques, better materials, and heightened awareness of the benefits of prevention and the use of fluoride all have resulted in better dental health in many countries. Improvements have also occurred in the area of dental trauma: Increased knowledge of the outcome of treatment approaches, along with improvement in materials and techniques, has led to better management and more predictable results. In this book, Dr Tsukiboshi emphasizes the importance of the three factors determining the prognosis of a traumatic injury: Accurate diagnosis of the extent and severity of the traumatic injury, the initial treatment of the acute aspect of the injury, and the long-term follow-up and treatment of sequelae to the injury. An important aspect often overlooked in other texts on dental trauma is the emphasis on avoiding unnecessary treatment procedures, particularly in the teeth of young patients.
