This is a pocket-sized reference book designed to be carried and used for quick information in a small animal clinical setting. The 1993 edition is the first pocket companion to Ettinger""s larger two-volume Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine. The book""s purpose, according to the author, is to be a ""ready co-reference source for daily clinical work."" This book is invaluable for all general practitioners and senior veterinary students. Except for the lack of emergency medicine information, the book meets the author""s objectives. The author intended this book to be used by general practitioners. It is equally helpful to senior veterinary students and residents in small animal medicine. The author is a well known, superb small animal medicine veterinarian, making him a credible authority. Graphs, tables, flow charts, and a few diagrams are available throughout the book. These help clarify and organize information. References are made to the parent book making it necessary to at least have access to this book. Other references can be found in the parent book. The index and table of contents are concise, complete, and well organized. The overall appearance of this book is very good and it is of convenient size for most pockets. The type is small in order to decrease the size of the book, but it is still quite legible. The drug appendixes are excellent and helpful as a quick reference. This book is an excellent resource and quite helpful during small animal clinical work. It may not be necessary for a library that carries Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine to also carry the pocket edition because the parent book carries the same andmore information that presumably would be preferred by one doing library research.
